52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History - New Year's Day

A new year has started and it begins a new series of 52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History. The one for this week is as follows:

Week 1: New Year’s. Did your family have any New Year’s traditions? How was the New Year celebrated during your childhood? Have you kept these traditions in the present day? This challenge runs from Saturday, January 1, 2011 through Friday, January 7, 2011. I challenge everyone to participate as often as they can and time permits.

When I was younger our family would buy some snacks to celebrate New Years. When the clock turned 12, we would bang the pots and pans and run around the yard yelling “Happy New Year!” We also got into the cars and honked the horns. If anyone was within a mile or so of our house sleeping, they would have been awake by the time we were finished. We also watched TV and saw the celebrations around the world.

As I got to be a teenager, I would attend the New Year’s Eve dance our church would have. I would get all dressed up, usually in a new dress, and visit with my friends. Sometimes we would go out to eat afterwards and do fireworks.

After I got married, the kids and I would do the pots and pans. My husband usually worked, so sometimes we went to Booneville, MS to visit with my Grandma. She would stay up and my Aunt and cousins would all stay up to welcome in the New Years.

Most of the time I have stayed up with maybe one or two exceptions. What do you do for New Years celebration?
